Abstract

Mitrofanoff’s continent urinary diversion is a surgical technique known and performed for several years. It is done from the appendix following the original principle to allow the drainage of bladder urine through the abdominal wall by intermittent self-catheterization.

In Mali, this technique is still in its infancy. We report here the second observation of this practice relating to a 14-year-old patient who was victim of a road accident (fracture of the pelvis and femur), with failure of the posterior urethroplasty attempt and who consulted us for impaired quality of life with an indwelling suprapubic catheter.

The diagnosis of total stenosis of the posterior urethra was retained and the feasible treatment option of choice was the Mitrofanoff transappendicular vesicostomy technique. From the review of the literature, the postoperative follow-up of our patient (complications, results and overall impact) is highly satisfactory.
